Best Solar Battery? How to Choose a Huawei LUNA2000

Huawei LUNA2000-S0 battery stack, one of the two residential ranges compared when choosing a solar battery

The best solar battery is the one that fits your load: five rows to check — energy, power, voltage, enclosure and weight — with every Huawei LUNA2000 figure.

There is no single best solar battery, and a page that names one without asking what you want to run is selling, not advising. What exists is a short list of rows on every battery record, and a best fit for a given load. This guide goes through those rows on the two residential Huawei ranges we stock, the LUNA2000-S0 and LUNA2000-S1, with the figures their records state, and then picks a battery for three real homes.

Products mentioned in this article

Row 1: usable energy, in kWh

This is how long the battery lasts. The need is simple arithmetic: the energy your home uses in a day × the hours to cover ÷ 24. A house using 25.4 kWh a day needs 4.2 kWh to get through a four-hour evening cut and 8.5 kWh for an eight-hour night. The sizing calculator works this out from your appliance list.

The S0 range comes in three sizes — 5, 10 and 15 kWh. The S1 range comes in nine, built from 5 kWh and 6.9 kWh modules: 5, 6.9, 10, 11.9, 13.8, 15, 16.9, 18.8 and 20.7 kWh. Both state LiFePO4 cells.

Row 2: power, in kW

This is how much the battery can run at one moment, and it is the row most buyers skip.

ModelUsable energyMaximum powerSystem weight
LUNA2000-5-S05 kWh2.5 kW (3.5 kW for 10 s)63.8 kg
LUNA2000-10-S010 kWh5.0 kW (7.0 kW for 10 s)113.8 kg
LUNA2000-15-S015 kWh5.0 kW (7.0 kW for 10 s)163.8 kg
LUNA2000-5-S15 kWh3.5 kW80 kg
LUNA2000-7-S16.9 kWh3.5 kW80 kg
LUNA2000-10-S110 kWh7.0 kW148 kg
LUNA2000-14-S113.8 kWh7.0 kW148 kg
LUNA2000-15-S115 kWh10.5 kW216 kg
LUNA2000-21-S120.7 kWh10.5 kW216 kg

Read the table across, not down. A LUNA2000-15-S0 and a LUNA2000-15-S1 hold the same 15 kWh, but the S0 states 5.0 kW and the S1 10.5 kW: at night the second can run twice the load of the first at one moment. If your evening load is lights, a fridge and a television, the difference does not matter; if it is cooling, it decides the purchase.

Row 3: voltage, the row that decides compatibility

Both ranges state an operating voltage of 350–560 V with a single-phase inverter and 600–980 V with a three-phase one. The inverter's own battery row has to show the same window, and the SUN2000-L1, M1 and MAP0 records name the batteries they accept: LUNA2000-5/10/15-S0 and LUNA2000-7/14/21-S1. Check the pair on the LUNA2000-S1 datasheet and on the inverter's page before ordering a battery for an inverter you already own.

Row 4: enclosure and temperature

The protection-degree row of both ranges states IP66; the operating temperature is -20 °C to +55 °C, the noise below 29 dB(A) and the maximum altitude 4,000 m. One note: the description line of the S0 record states IP65 where its specification row states IP66. We publish both; if the battery is going outside, plan for the lower figure.

Row 5: weight and size

A battery hangs on a wall or stands on a floor, and it is heavy. One S0 module weighs 50 kg and one S1 module 68 kg; a full 15 kWh S0 stack is 163.8 kg and 670 × 1,320 × 150 mm, a full 20.7 kWh S1 stack 216 kg and 590 × 1,230 × 255 mm. The LUNA2000-S0 datasheet carries the dimensions of every size.

Three homes, three choices

An apartment, evening cuts. 13.8 kWh a day, so 2.3 kWh for four hours, and one air conditioner to keep running. The LUNA2000-5-S0 holds 5 kWh; its 2.5 kW covers the 2,450 W the apartment draws when everything is on, and its 3.5 kW ten-second peak is below the 4,850 W reached when the compressor starts — so the air conditioner should not start on battery at the same moment as the washing machine. The LUNA2000-7-S1, with 3.5 kW continuous, leaves more room.

A family house, full nights. 25.4 kWh a day, so 8.5 kWh for eight hours. A 10 kWh model covers it: the S0 with 5.0 kW or the S1 with 7.0 kW. The house system with overnight backup lists the LUNA2000-17-S1, with 16.9 kWh and 10.5 kW, roughly twice the need — room for a second night of cloud or a longer cut.

A villa, full nights. 49.5 kWh a day, 16.5 kWh for eight hours, four air conditioners. The LUNA2000-21-S1 holds 20.7 kWh and delivers 10.5 kW, which is what the villa system with overnight backup lists. The villa's peak of 11,700 W is above 10.5 kW, so one large load has to wait while another starts.

Beyond the home

For a shop floor or a factory the records move to cabinets: the LUNA2000-97KWH-1H1 states 96.8 kWh and 92 kW, and the LUNA2000-241 Series 241 kWh with a rated power of 108 kW, both at IP55. They are listed with the residential ranges under batteries.

How to decide in five minutes

  1. Get your two numbers — kWh for the hours to cover, and kW running at once — from the calculator.
  2. Find the smallest model in the table whose two columns are both above them.
  3. Put the S0 and S1 candidates next to each other on the LUNA2000 S0 vs S1 comparison.
  4. Confirm the voltage window against your inverter.

Every LUNA2000 record states a 5-year warranty. The price on each product page is the price you pay, and orders are collected from our store in Dubai or Riyadh. We are an authorised Huawei distributor; this is how to choose from the catalogue we hold, not a ranking of the market.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best solar battery for a house?

The one whose usable energy covers the hours you want and whose power covers what runs at once. For the house in our examples, an evening cut needs 4.2 kWh, which the LUNA2000-7-S1 covers with 6.9 kWh usable and 3.5 kW; a full night needs 8.5 kWh, which the 10 kWh models cover.

How much power can a LUNA2000 battery deliver?

It depends on the model. The records state 2.5 kW for the LUNA2000-5-S0 and 5.0 kW for the 10 and 15 kWh S0, with 3.5 kW and 7.0 kW available for 10 seconds. The S1 range states 3.5 kW per module: 3.5 kW on the 5 and 6.9 kWh models, 7.0 kW on the 10, 11.9 and 13.8 kWh models and 10.5 kW from 15 kWh up.

Which Huawei inverters accept a LUNA2000 battery?

The SUN2000-L1, SUN2000-M1 and SUN2000-MAP0 records list LUNA2000-5/10/15-S0 and LUNA2000-7/14/21-S1 as compatible batteries. The battery works at 350–560 V on a single-phase inverter and at 600–980 V on a three-phase one.

Can a LUNA2000 battery be installed outdoors?

The protection-degree row of the LUNA2000-S0 and S1 records states IP66 and an operating temperature of -20 °C to +55 °C. The description line of the S0 record states IP65, so we give both figures; plan for the lower one.
